Redevelopment of Bristol’s Colston Hall

The Colston Hall in Bristol is to be redeveloped – providing the funding is in place the transformation will start in 2017 – the hall’s 150th year – and could take two years. The redevelopment will include remodelling the auditorium, its balcony, roof and an overhaul of the smaller Lantern venue. It will also restore the iconic Victorian frontage and open up the building’s cellars for the first time in 100 years where educational workshops take place. The call for bids to enter this competition came earlier this year, and MACH Acoustics was pleased to spend some time in this great venue gathering ideas to propose for acoustic consultancy.

Max Reynolds says “As part of the Colston Hall bid, MACH Acoustics produced some flythrough animations of the existing and proposed halls. The animations not only included a visualisation but also an auralisation of the spaces to allow the viewer to get a feel for the relative lighting and acoustic characteristics of the two spaces.

Generating animations like this requires:
·         Building an acoustic model of the space and defining an animation path through the model
·         Generating impulse responses at set intervals along the animation path
·         Convolving these impulse responses together with audio to generate the auralisation through the model
·         Enhancing the acoustic model visually and carrying out a similar process to generate the visuals along the animation path
·         The audio and video then need to be joined together and the final animation is created
The real power of an auralisation is that it allows us to hear what the space will sound like before it is built. The visualisation is an essential component in giving the viewer some context of what they are listening to. This sort of animation can be used to highlight different configurations and how this impacts the visual and acoustic characteristics of any given space. Producing auralisations like this provides an unrivalled level of clarity and understanding between the acoustician and the client and the rest of the design team of what a space will be like, maximising the chances of end user satisfaction.”
So, as to the result of the competition – did we win? No, but Ze Nunes and the MACH Acoustics team were invited for interview which gave them a good opportunity to meet the architect Levitt Bernstein and the Colston Hall panel. The architect made some complimentary observations, and in terms of being Bristolians the MACH team will be winners yet enjoying the Colston Hall one day in full glory.

Easy Sound Testing… How do they do that?

The uniqueness of this project is that we have taken a standard process and studied every element with the chain of delivery.  We have then improved every aspect of this chain, but using highly innovative solutions based upon a wide range of engineering solutions.

Within a competitive industry clients need to be getting fast and accurate results delivered in a way that suits and helps them. This project started by looking at our booking process, the organization of test equipment and our data processing methodology.  The second goal of this project was to reduce our carbon footprint and to look at opening new markets in the field of sound testing and measurement.
Booking System
Various staff taking calls and booking them into a diary, is that as good as it can get? The solution has been to create a web based data system, containing information relating to test locations, our equipment, cars and engineers available for testing.  By cleverly arranging this database, our staff and clients can use our web based booking system, which provides more competitive testing rates on the grounds that we know that we are in a customers area.  Since the location of every sound test, meeting and environmental noise assessment is sorted though a single booking system, our efficiency is increased dramatically.
In effect, our system works the opposite way to Easyjet, hence the name Easy Sound Testing.  The maths behind this relatively simple idea is complex, however we have shown that we are reducing the cost to clients and have cut our testing mileage by more than 15%.  We are now looking to increase this figure to 25%.

Data Processing
Issuing reports on site brings many advantages, including client satisfaction and the ability to investigate and support clients in the case of failures.  The time advantage this brings to the tester is also important, improving accuracy and increasing profitability as the report is generated immediately. 
To do this, we have developed our own software.  The software works by taking on site data relating to room dimensions, test locations and file data numbers on the sound level meter.  Upon the completion of the test, the software uploads raw excel test data from a Norsonic, NTI or B&K sound level meter and combines it with the site notes initially entered into the software.  The results being a file containing sorted test data combined with on site test information, as well as generating test certificates and tables of results.

By developing an intelligent system MACH has not only reduced its carbon footprint considerably but clients also benefit with a more intuitive system that they can take more control of themselves.

Site Assessments and Remedial Support

MACH Acoustics have vast experience in providing site reviews/assessments for buildings across all sectors within the built environment. On-site detailing is a crucial aspect in achieving on-site design targets and Building Control requirements are an area which can be overlooked at the design stage. Contractors and site workman are not always aware of the consequences of poor detailing; often running services through separating walls. This can cause huge problems on-site and remedial measures can be difficult to implement.

MACH Acoustics have experienced a huge array of site defects and therefore have a variety of on-site solutions for most site issues. Acoustic site reviews are an essential part of the ongoing design process and allows the acoustician to communicate directly with the site team to ensure that on site design targets are met. On paper designs are not always feasible when it comes to the build stage and mistakes on site are commonplace. Site assessments not only help create a building that is fit for purpose but can also result in significant cost savings as mistakes can be identified and rectified at an early stage.

MACH Acoustics has recently taken on three new members of staff.  This growth has broadened the range of skills and experience within the company and we are now is strong position to expand our services in environmental acoustics.  The new team members have brought with them experience in the following areas of environmental acoustics:

          •     Wind farm acoustic assessment
          •     Road and rail noise assessment
          •     Industrial noise assessment

WINDFARMS AND URBAN TURBINES

New staff at MACH Acoustics have experience in all aspects of wind farm developments from feasibility and planning through to compliance testing.

Background noise surveys
Background noise surveys are carried out using weatherproof environmental noise loggers. Noise loggers are placed at key residential locations to establish the base line noise levels.  The measurement data is they correlated with wind speed measurements to establish the relationship between wind speed and background noise level.  The

Noise assessment
Using computer modelling software (CADNA), wind turbine noise can be predicted at nearby residential locations over a range of wind speeds.  The predictions are then compared with theETSU-97 noise limits.
Modelling software is also used in the turbine selection process and to fine tune site layouts and  mirco-siting

Sound power level testing
MACH Acoustics can perform sound power testing according to the methodology of International Standard IEC61400-11 Wind turbine generator systems – Part 11: Acoustic noise measurement techniques (IEC61400-11) to verify that the measured sound power levels comply with the sound power levels guaranteed by the manufacturer.

Compliance assessments
Post construction noise assessment is conducted using noise loggers and wind speed data.  Regression analysis is used to establish the post-construction background noise level at each monitoring location.
These values are able to be compared with pre-construction background noise curves and noise limit curves to assess compliance.

BaleHaus @ Bath – Modcell Acoustic Testing

BaleHaus @ Bath – Modcell Acoustic Testing
The BaleHaus @ Bath University
MACH Acoustics has recently conducted sound insulation testing at the BaleHaus at the University of Bath. The BaleHaus project is research program being coordinated by the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. 
The BaleHaus is constructed from Modcell. The ModCell system utilises the excellent thermal insulation qualities of straw bale construction to form prefabricated panels constructed locally to reduce energy requirements for transportation.

As a supporter of low-energy, sustainable design, this project was of great interest to MACH Acoustics. We were thrilled when be asked to be involved in the ongoing research into the properties of this ‘carbon-negative’ construction material.

The acoustic testing was conducted according to ISO 140-5:1998. The presence of building management system controlled window within the test room required careful consideration when planning for the test. To avoid the effects of sound transmission through this element, the entire window frame was sealed using the two layers of 15mm Soundbloc fixed to a partially de-coupled frame. Testing was also conducted with the window frame unsealed for comparison purposes.

The results of the testing found that Modcell is a suitable facade material for all but the most challenging noise environments. The analysis found that the internal noise level was governed almost entirely by the noise transfer through the window.
