Project Information

Two large residential towers prominently situated within the development of the Greenwich Peninsula demonstrated MACH Acoustics approach to cost efficient residential design.

Project Details

Location: Greenwich, London
Client: Knight Dragon Developments
Architect: Jestico + Whiles / CF Moller Architects
Contractor: Wates Construction
Contract Value: £70M
Completion Date: Late 2015

The two riverside concrete frame residential complexes were designed by different architects, one with approximately 140 apartments and the other with over 200.

MACH Acoustics were approached by Wates to review the design in detail with a means to achieving + 5 dB over ADE requirements for airborne sound insulation.  This required extensive reviews/modelling of constructions and detailed flanking assessments, all keeping in mind cost.

A detailed modelling approach was also taken towards tackling noise ingress through the façade, and noise breakout from plant using a noise map model with the development, plant and surrounding residential areas.

Our Services

  • In depth review and modelling of constructions to meet + 5 dB over ADE sound insulation requirements.
  • Noise break in and out assessment of plant and ambient noise using noise map modelling.
  • Internal M&E risk assessments.
  • Guidance on communal spaces.
  • Site inspections, early testing and full pre completion testing.

Site inspections were important in communicating with workers on site and correcting any mistakes and minimizing the risk of any post completion remedial work.

Early sound insulation testing on sample rooms helped to validate the value engineering process, by confirming that proposed constructions were meeting + 5 dB requirements.

Pre-completion testing of both plots indicated a fully compliant building achieving at least 5 dB over ADE requirements (even over 10 dB in a lot of areas), as well as up to 25 dB under impact sound insulation targets.
